Luxury fashion house OYUNA uses Ultrafabrics’s Volar Bio vegan leather to create a new Squash bag.

Ultrafabrics, the world’s leading animal-free fabric manufacturer, has partnered with sustainability-conscious luxury fashion house OYUNA to create a new bag using its Volar Bio textile.

Ultrafabrics’s first bio-based, high-performance fabric, Volar Bio, is revolutionary in design and style. Committed to reducing dependency on finite resources, Ultrafabrics incorporated renewable, plant-based materials into the multiple layers of its proprietary construction. Proudly touting a 29% Bio Preferred Program Label, Volar Bio was created for the designs of tomorrow. Maintaining the unrivaled performance of all Ultrafabrics materials, Volar Bio is easy to clean with an organic texture that will provide a contemporary aesthetic to anything it covers.

Squash is inspired by the soft feel and suppleness of Volar Bio. Its design maintains the continuity of the non-woven textile, inviting the user to interact with the material, inside and out. The material is left to fold over itself with minimal interruption, encouraging the wearer to grab the bag in their arms and cuddle it close to the body. Quash is available in two sizes and three colors: orange, ivory, and grey. It can be worn on the shoulder with a six cm-wide detachable strap or used as a clutch bag.

Ultrafabrics and OYUNA both share a love of colour. The fashion brand’s founder, London-based Mongolian designer Oyuna Tserendorj, comments, “I have been looking for an animal-free, leather-like fabric to make the Squash bag with and Ultrafabrics’ Volar Bio fits my specifications. It’s soft, easy to work with and the 29% bio contentis a great step towards a 100% bio-leather alternative. And I love the colors.”

Tserendorj has also been featured in Ultrafabrics’ Color Lab content, where she discusses her love of color and its importance in her work.

“Color is both a feeling and a physical presence. It triggers a complete experience. Color is very important in design and is interesting because context shapes how we see it. There is no such thing as ugly colour, it’s all about how it is used. Unexpected combinations can make you see beauty you didn’t see before. With colour, I can activate design. I can shape the geometry of a garment, I can contract a form, but colour defines its architecture.”

Oyuna channels the freedom and autonomy of her life in the Steppes into garments and homewares for the global nomad with all her designs. He harnesses the raw energy of the material into progressive, architectural designs that envelop and indulge.

“Our partnership with OYUNA has resulted in a skilfully designed bag that shows the beauty and versatility of our animal-free fabric,” says Nicole Meier, Director of Branding at Ultrafabrics. “Sustainably made fabrics are the way of the future, and we are at the forefront of responsible innovation for a variety of uses, including fashion.

As a leader in the textile and soft surfaces industry, Ultrafabrics has long been a partner and resource for brands to future-proof their products with trendsetting colour choices.
