New brand Deity New York was a pandemic project that’s now produced four collections, including one showcased at NYFW 22′ in February.

Deity New York’s most recent collection is inspired by the designer Renee Bishop’s former goth days. With the gothic look making a comeback in celebrity style – think Kourtney Kardashian and Lori Harvey, the collection is the perfect combination of dark chic and glamorous shape. What makes Deity New York stand out aesthetically are the European influences paired with the functionality of the Manhattanite lifestyle.

Across all Renee Bishops designs, you will see classic silhouettes, bold cuts with built-in corsets, or lace combined with sequins. Renee gave the traditional goth look a touch of elegance and added a sprinkle of color. We caught up with her to get behind the scenes of the latest collection.

Renee Bishop of Deity New York

What are your thoughts on the resurgence of the goth look?

I’m thrilled to see people embracing their dark side in life. We can’t enjoy the light without a little darkness in life. I feel we as a society are embracing our shadows more, and it’s allowing us to explore other aspects of ourselves.

What made you look to your former goth days for this collection?

It was an important part of my life that gave me depth and insight, and I think it’s important to honor those moments in life.

What are a couple of tips for other women with a dream of starting a brand?

To learn how to ask for help and assemble a strong community and team of believers in your business. Hyper-independence can be our biggest downfall sometimes. It takes a village to build anything monumental.

The new Deity, New York collection will be available to shop from the second week of September this year via the brand’s website https://deitynewyork.com.
