On Tuesday, September 27, experts and journalists gathered at the Waverly Inn to dine and discuss Candela Medical’s new device: the Matrix System. With a component for radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, called the Matrix Pro, the Matrix System is designed to restore skin during its aging journey, strengthening the skin structure and adding volume.

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that inserts small needles into the skin to treat a variety of conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, scars, dark spots, stretch marks, and more. It encourages collagen production in order for the skin to heal quickly and regrow smoothly.

Doctors Stacy Chimento, Marisa Garshick, and Flora Levin assembled to discuss Candela Medical’s new technology. “This is smart self-adjusting technology. Every one of our skin is very unique to each of us,” said Dr. Chimento. “You can’t just throw a device and just say ‘Everyone gets the same energy, everyone gets the same depth’. It doesn’t work like that. Everyone is different.”

The Matrix Pro has a first-of-its-kind system that provides the user with real-time feedback on what’s going on during needle insertion for the best results. “As a provider, we know exactly where we are in the skin, and we can precisely deliver this depth of radiofrequency energy through these little micro channels that we’re creating with the needles,” Dr. Chimento said.

Another major perk of this new system, as described by Dr. Garshick, is its efficiency. “Nobody wants downtime and one of the reasons why radiofrequency microneedling, particularly in my practice, has been so popular is that people want results, but they don’t want downtime, and this is a great way to deliver that,” said Dr. Garshick. The procedure is shown to take less than an hour and leaves minimal redness on the skin.

Candela Medical is continuing to do research to improve and discover new ways the Matrix System is treating all kinds of skin issues. One study is the use of the Matrix Pro to treat malar edema, which is the puffiness of the cheeks. “I don’t invest in devices that do not deliver,” said Dr. Levin. “We’re doing a study to really show objectively and to prove that that works. I think it’s going to be really life-changing for a lot of people because it’s such a common problem. So there are so many things on the horizon that I’m really really excited about.”
