Following the successful launch of its second season, there is no doubt that this year’s fashion trends are going to take influence from the HBO Max Original series Euphoria. With each character presenting their own unique style, people are already searching for different pieces inspired by them.
With 2.4 million viewers tuning in to watch Euphoria’s first episode of season two, the American TV series has become a hit in the entertainment and fashion world. Fashion experts at WeThrift predict that the comeback in 90s/00s style will only be elevated, thanks to the cast of Euphoria paving the way. Google search volume data was analyzed to determine which character’s looks are set to have the most influence in 2022 and highlighting the trends that have caught the viewers’ eyes.
- Maddy Perez (12,000 global searches – Maddy Euphoria Outfits)
Maddy has a style that transitions from day to night. One of her most iconic pieces is a pair of black flares, with delicate cut-out detailing on the hips. The “I am gia pants” (1,100 global searches) give the illusion of a low rise design that is reminiscent of 00s pop stars like Destiny’s Child and Britney Spears.
Her makeup also coincides with the pop star theme. In season one she is seen wearing a “blue eyeshadow look” (900 global searches), a bolder take on the once statement frosty blue shadow, which has been more recently seen on the likes of Dua Lipa and Gigi Hadid.
- Cassie Howard (9,500 global searches – Cassie Euphoria Outfits)
Cassie is usually seen in something fun, flirty, and pink. Yet her most popular outfit stems from her Halloween look. The search for “cowboy outfit girl” (2,200 global searches), was in reference to an outfit consisting of lingerie, a cow print skirt, and cowboy boots. Although fancy-dress, Western-style shoes are already popping up all over online retailers. Cassie’s ice-skating makeup also struck a chord with viewers. The look saw her face dotted entirely with rhinestones (68,000 global searches). This use of decorative gems and jewels draws inspiration from 90s pop-star, Gwen Stefani.
- Rue Bennett (6,500 global searches – Rue Euphoria Outfits)
The “skater girl aesthetic” (1,500 global searches), once made popular by Avril Lavigne, is now embodied by Rue. She is frequently seen in oversized clothing and converse on her feet. However, her more eye-catching choice of clothing, “Hawaiian shirts” (13,000 searches) is serving 90s heartthrob. Think Brad Pitt in Fight Club and Leonardo DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet.
Despite not typically wearing much makeup throughout the show, Rue’s “glitter tears” (1,500 global searches) are less of a statement makeup look and more artistic symbolism of her emotions and inner struggles with body image and drug addiction.
- Jules Vaughn (4,200 global searches – Jules Euphoria Outfits)
Perhaps the only one who dresses in something “appropriate” for school, her “pleated denim skirt” (600 global searches) was arguably made famous by Alicia Silverstone in Clueless. A pleated tartan skirt is an example of preppy 90s attire, often seen sported by characters in modern-day TV shows like Gossip Girl. Jules’ makeup on the other hand is often playful and colorful, and her “cloud eye makeup” (350 global searches) is a creative take on the 90s graphic liner trend.
- Kat Hernandez (3,200 global searches – Kate Euphoria Outfits)
A summary of Kat’s style is soft grunge, well known it seems for her corsets, particularly her “leather corset” (600 global searches). Corsets and harnesses accentuate curves, and the texture of leather gives a nod to the 90s rock vibes. True to this aesthetic, Kat’s Halloween “red makeup look” (350 global searches) saw her with blood-red lips and shadow to match. Although dressed as a nun, the makeup pays homage to punk rock.
Retail and shopping expert Nick Drewe from WeThrift, who are behind the research, says: “Successful TV shows and films have a huge influence on the fashion industry, especially those targeted at young adults. Thanks to social media, fashion can be shared more easily, and exact clothing items can be tagged with a link that send consumers directly to the online retailer. Whilst each character has their own unique style, they all represent an aspect of 90s/00s fashion, meaning they look great on screen together or as individuals, think early Spice Girls.”
