Vivienne Tam’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection was inspired by the adventure-action film, Monster Hunt, and its adorable main character Wuba, which underscore tolerance and co-existence, family values, love, and hope. The line represents a crossover collaboration between two remarkable tech-forward talents: Designer Tam joins forces with animation film director Raman Hui to bring traditional Chinese culture into the international spotlight for an artful unique aesthetic to wearable fashion.

The film’s lush imagery finds expression in prints echoing the varied landscapes of mountains and rivers. Colors reflecting nature blues, greens, sands, and other earth tones with touches of aurora corals, misty mauves, and dusky pinks — are rendered in soft denim, cotton twill, silk, voile, silk chiffon, lace, and fine mesh. Signature mesh overlays and hand-crafted embroideries depict Wuba and other mystical creatures such as the double headed crane and fabled nine tailed fox in

a magical dreamland. For example, there is a lovely pink off-shoulder shirtdress with a flying crane embroidery; a nine fox tails embroidered T-shirt, and Wuba peeks at you from denim coats, silk cotton tops and skirts, a silk wrap Georgette dress, and more pieces throughout the fun collection.

Silhouettes are airy, relaxed, and comfortable, but are given shape by sash belts at the waist or sleeves, and dramatic gathers. East meets West and Yin meets Yang — with a nod to the masculine in boxy, oversized coats and dusters with a Daoist influence to feminine ruffled dresses with asymmetric handkerchief hems and ruched tops with a romantic flair. Tam remains a master storyteller who successfully combines contrasting forces!

Tam’s collection certainly is imaginative and playful and merges fantasy to modern, urban chic that will work for all women. This is why she is a favorite among out-of-the-box fashionistas who also seek comfort as they dress memorably.
