Red Carpet Review

May 1st dawns an amusingly dramatic day in fashion. After awards season, the MET Gala gathers the hottest stars for an exclusive opportunity to be seen in vibrant high-fashion couture. The best part is the liberal and fun dress code – anything goes. It is the only day in the entire year that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is closed. Each year, The Costume Institute hosts two annual exhibitions. The first 2017 exhibition will host  Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo and is featuring a retrospective called “Art of the In-Between” to be on display from May 4th – September 4, 2017. “She is the ultimate and uncompromising modernist out of any other designer that I can think of”, Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator in charge told New York Magazine. Comme des Garçons has inspired top brands and designers for 48 years while staying true to aesthetic and connecting her roots with futuristic designs.

Katy Perry is this year’s MET Gala co-host & co-chair, who wore a long red chiffon Maison Margiela ensemble that attached to a head adornment opening night. Among the few who had the privilege to wear Comme des Garçons this evening, MET Gala red carpet alumni Rihanna, Pharell Williams and his wife Helen Lasichanh sported the designer’s creative garments. Rihanna owned the red carpet, yet again, with her vibrant flare in a Cherry-blossom ensemble that grew up her torso as an actual tree and draped along her sides. Her makeup featured an airbrushed look across her cheekbones and eyes, while her hair was styled in a top bun and wisped bangs. Her red heels included straps that wrapped up her leg and eventually under the dress.

Interestingly, many celebrities wore custom H&M ensembles tonight. Notable guests such as Ashley Graham, Sasha Lane, Nikki Minaj, Jourdan Dunn and Future all sported unique looks from the fast fashion retailer. Sarah Jessica Parker influenced an H&M collaboration in 2015 for her MET Gala look, which may have sparked the interests of others to pursue a look by H&M for a high-fashion event. The best-dressed men were Ansel Elgort in Tom Ford and Jaden Smith in Lou is Vuitton.

Many celebrity couples attended the Gala with their significant other this evening. Blake Lively wore a stunning peacock inspired Versace gown while husband Ryan Reynolds wore a blue bow tie to compliment each other’s looks. Tom Brady’s wife/supermodel Gisele Bunchen was stunning  in a form fitted silver gown. Selena Gomez reassured her relationship with The Weeknd as they attended together. This might have been Selena’s most couture look yet! Her blush pink Coach dress swayed gracefully while her heavy red airbrush eye makeup balanced her look. Serena Williams and fiance Alexis Ohanian attended as she sported her baby bump in a green silk Versace gown.

The ones that stole the show with their organic avant-garde flare include the high-fashion low-key designers of the Row, Mary-Kate, and Ashley Olsen. Their designer gowns were unknown, but their looks screamed MET Gala perfection. Zendaya shocked onlookers in her multi-colored, earth patterned Dolce & Gabanna gown. Halle Berry’s gold and black Versace gown included 3D flowers that flowed along the body of her dress. Lena Dunham used her MET Gala opportunity to voice her support for Planned Parenthood by sporting a pin on her beautiful Elizabeth Kennedy gown while Priyanka Chopra brought a form utilitarian look with a long trench coat gown by Ralph Lauren.

Models represented their brand partnerships on the red carpet. Gigi Hadid wore a gold Tommy Hilfiger gown, while her stunning sister wore a long fishnet dress by Alexander Wang. Kendall Jenner wore a sexy ensemble from La Perla. Cara Delevingne rocked a silver, skin tight long sleeve pant jumpsuit by Chanel.
