To kick off their S/S18 presentation, dancers clad in Matiere’s latest collection performed a dazzling routine. As glistening ballerinas plied on the mirrored runway, models walked in sleeveless rain jackets, belted monochrome jumpsuits, and colorful anoraks. Leather and translucent fanny packs were strapped to the chests and waists of models. A rainbow of sherbet paraded the catwalk, as trousers, hoodies, sweatshirts came in dusty lilac and pink, while a number of bucket hats were shown in soft shades of blue.

The smoke and mirrors of the presentation couldn’t hide the fact that the whole collection was a reiteration of what was already being worn on the streets of New York. What one expects to see from a collection during Men’s NFYW is the conception of an original idea, a brilliant notion at what menswear could become. Instead, Matiere occupied a valuable spot on the fashion calendar to parade a line of overpriced athletic wear. An element of design appears to be overrated these days.
